How Much Does It Cost to Hire an SDR in 2026? Salary, Fully Loaded Cost and Cost Per Meeting

The cost to hire an SDR in 2026: $55,000 to $60,000 base, $85,000 OTE, $100,000 to $130,000 fully loaded once tools, management, recruiting and ramp are counted, and $800 to $1,400 per held meeting in year one. Every line item, plus how turnover doubles the bill.

How Much Does It Cost to Hire an SDR in 2026? Salary, Fully Loaded Cost and Cost Per Meeting

The salary is the smallest part of what an SDR costs. In the United States in September 2026, a sales development representative's base salary averages $55,000 to $60,000 and on-target earnings sit around $85,000. Add payroll taxes and benefits, the tool stack, a share of a manager, the recruiting cost, the equipment and the months of ramp during which the rep produces little, and the fully loaded cost of one SDR seat lands between $100,000 and $130,000 a year. Then add turnover, which in this role runs above 30 percent annually, and the three-year cost of keeping one seat productive has been estimated at $157,000 to $298,000.

This post walks through every line, from salary to the cost per held meeting in year one and year two, so that a hiring decision can be made on the number that matters rather than the one on the offer letter. If you are still deciding whether to hire at all, pair it with When to Hire Your First SDR; if you have decided, How to Hire SDRs in 2026 covers the process.

SDR salary and OTE in 2026

Base: $55,000 to $60,000 on average nationally, with a wider observed range of $50,000 to $68,000 depending on company stage, segment and city. OTE: about $85,000 median, typically $65,000 to $95,000, with Seattle around $100,000, New York and San Diego around $90,000, and enterprise SDRs in San Francisco, New York and Austin regularly above $110,000. Actual earnings usually land at 60 to 80 percent of OTE, so budget cash compensation at roughly $70,000 to $75,000 for a rep on an $85,000 plan, and the full $85,000 if your plan is realistic and the rep is good, which is the outcome you want.

The fully loaded cost, line by line

Employer costs. Payroll taxes, health insurance, retirement match and paid leave add 20 to 30 percent to cash compensation in the US; on $80,000 of cash that is $16,000 to $24,000. Tools. A sequencing platform, a data provider, a dialer, a LinkedIn Sales Navigator seat, conversation intelligence and a CRM seat run $500 to $1,000 a month per rep, or $6,000 to $12,000 a year, and that is before the secondary sending domains and inbox infrastructure that cold email now requires.

Management. One SDR manager typically covers six to eight reps; allocate one-seventh of a $130,000 to $160,000 manager and you add $18,000 to $23,000 per seat. If you have one SDR and the VP of Sales manages them, the cost is the VP's time, which is more expensive than it looks. Recruiting. An agency fee of 15 to 25 percent of base is $8,000 to $15,000; doing it in-house costs hiring-manager hours instead, plus job-board fees. Equipment and overhead: laptop, software licences, office or remote stipend, another $3,000 to $5,000. Total, excluding ramp and turnover: roughly $100,000 to $130,000 for a US-based seat.

Ramp: the months you pay full price for partial output

SDR ramp averages three to six months, and industry data show it has lengthened, with SaaS companies reporting an increase from about four months to nearly six over the last five years. During ramp you pay the full seat cost for a fraction of the meetings. A conservative model: month one produces nothing, months two and three produce a third and two-thirds of the ramped rate. On a ramped rate of ten held meetings a month, that is ten meetings in the first quarter instead of thirty, and year one delivers roughly 100 held meetings rather than 120.

Turnover: the cost you pay twice

Average SDR tenure is 14 to 18 months and annual turnover is reported between 30 and 45 percent, the highest of any sales role. Subtract the ramp and a typical rep gives you about twelve to thirteen months of full productivity before the seat has to be refilled. Each refill repeats the recruiting fee, the ramp and the pipeline gap while the seat is empty, which is why analyses that annualise the cost of one productive seat over three years arrive at $157,000 to $298,000 rather than the $110,000 a single year suggests.

The practical implication for budgeting: if you are hiring one SDR, model 1.4 hires over two years, not one. If you are hiring a team of five, model replacing two of them every year and the manager's time to do it.

Cost per qualified meeting: the worked example

Take a $115,000 fully loaded seat. Year one, with ramp, produces about 100 held meetings if the rep reaches ten a month, which is a reasonable mid-market target: $1,150 per held meeting. Not all held meetings qualify; if the AE accepts 80 percent, that is $1,440 per qualified meeting in year one. Year two, if the rep stays and holds twelve a month, the seat produces 144 held meetings at $800 each, or about $1,000 per qualified meeting. Blend across a typical 16-month tenure and the realistic figure for an in-house SDR in the US is $900 to $1,400 per qualified meeting, which is why our earlier benchmark of $600 to $1,200 per meeting for in-house teams is, if anything, generous.

None of that makes the hire wrong. If a qualified meeting is worth $3,000 to you because your average contract value is $40,000 and you close one in four opportunities, a $1,200 meeting is a bargain. It makes the hire wrong when the meeting is worth $800 or less, and it makes the hire risky when the message is unproven, because every one of those cost lines is fixed and the meetings are not.

Offshore SDR: cheaper seat, same math

A remote SDR from a staffing marketplace costs a fraction of the US seat: HireSDRs lists $1,999 a month full time as of September 2026, or about $24,000 a year, with contractor paperwork bundled. Add tools, data and your own management time and the seat lands around $35,000 to $45,000. At eight held meetings a month after ramp, that is roughly $450 to $600 per meeting, materially cheaper than a US hire, and still subject to ramp, turnover and the bad-month problem. The trade-offs, and the cases where it is the right answer, are in What a $1,999 Offshore SDR Really Costs Per Meeting.

How the alternatives price the same meeting

Managed SDR as a Service programs cost $4,000 to $18,000 a month and, at realistic meeting counts, $500 to $1,500 per held meeting; the full breakdown is in SDR as a Service Pricing in 2026. Appointment-setting agencies on a pay-per-meeting basis quote $150 to $600 for mainstream titles and $800-plus for enterprise, usually with setup fees and minimums. A pay-per-meeting marketplace prices only the outcome: on Bountii, the company pays $199 a month for ten target accounts or $499 for thirty and sets a bounty from $200 per qualified meeting, paid only after the meeting is held and confirmed; typical all-in cost is $350 to $1,000 per qualified meeting, with no ramp, no recruiting and no cost for a month that produces nothing.

The pattern across all of them is that the per-meeting price on a good month is similar, from $500 to $1,000, and the difference is who carries the risk of the bad months. An in-house hire puts all of it on you. A retainer shares a little. Pay per meeting puts it on the seller of the meeting.

So should you hire?

Work the three numbers: what a qualified meeting is worth to you, the realistic cost per qualified meeting of a hire (start at $1,000 and adjust for your market), and whether you can carry $100,000-plus of fixed cost through a ramp and a possible refill. If the meeting is worth well over the cost and you can carry the fixed cost, hire, and hire well. If not, buy meetings first and hire on the data they generate. Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire an SDR?+

In the US in 2026, an SDR's base salary is $55,000 to $60,000 with on-target earnings around $85,000. Fully loaded, including employer costs, tools, a share of management, recruiting and equipment, one seat costs $100,000 to $130,000 a year before ramp and turnover are counted.

What is the fully loaded cost of an SDR?+

Cash compensation of $70,000 to $85,000, plus 20 to 30 percent employer costs, $6,000 to $12,000 in tools, $18,000 to $23,000 of allocated management, $8,000 to $15,000 of recruiting and $3,000 to $5,000 of equipment: roughly $100,000 to $130,000 a year for a US-based rep.

What is the cost per meeting for an in-house SDR?+

About $1,150 per held meeting in year one once a three-to-six-month ramp is included, and $800 in a full second year at twelve meetings a month; $900 to $1,400 per qualified meeting blended across a typical 16-month tenure.

How much does SDR turnover cost?+

Average SDR tenure is 14 to 18 months and turnover runs above 30 percent a year. Each replacement repeats the recruiting fee, the ramp and the pipeline gap; annualised over three years, one productive SDR seat has been estimated at $157,000 to $298,000.

Is it cheaper to hire an SDR or outsource?+

Per meeting on a good month, they cost about the same, $500 to $1,000. Hiring is cheaper only when the rep stays and performs; outsourcing on a retainer is cheaper when you need volume without headcount; paying per meeting on a marketplace is cheapest when you cannot carry fixed cost through ramp and bad months, or when your targets are named accounts and senior titles.

How much does an offshore SDR cost?+

Staffing marketplaces list full-time remote SDRs at about $2,000 a month, or $24,000 a year, as of September 2026. With tools, data and your management time the seat lands around $35,000 to $45,000, or roughly $450 to $600 per held meeting after ramp.
